About this deal

Would I be right in saying that there are differing opinions on whether antifreeze is required? I suspect the installer only used inhibitor last year but then last year was the mildest of the last 3 winters. We have decided to offer advice based on how the home is being used or when in the season you may need the advice: The condensate pipe work should, wherever possible, be vertical until it reaches the main 110mm waste pipe under the home. This way the condensate has the easiest possible journey. Horizontal condensate pipes will trap fluid and may freeze. A common misconception with frost protection is that the radiators around the property will come on. As long as the system is working correctly, this won't happen. The winter cold can be brutal in some areas, posing harmful repercussions that go unreported, such as the chance that the water in the heating pipes may freeze in the portions of pipes that are exposed to air. The static caravan’s complete heating system will be shut down if this happens. Antifreeze liquid should be used to heat static caravans that are left unoccupied for long periods.

Caraflow CHS contains synergistic corrosion inhibitors to protect metals commonly found in such systems. It has been tested in accordance with BS5117 and found to meet BS6580 and ASTM D1384 corrosion standards. It also contains scale and biological inhibitors to help preventfouling -thus promoting long operational life and high thermal efficiency.A combi boiler delivers heating and hot water on demand using the mains water supply. They’re single cost-effective heating systems that don’t take up much space as there’s no need for additional tanks or cylinders. Properties with 1-2 bathrooms are ideal for combi boilers – larger properties should turn to a system boiler. The Alde G13 Antifreeze is also pre-mixed with a 50:50 ratio of ethylene glycol and deionized water so you can rest assured that the solution is strong enough and you will not have to dilute it yourself. you wake up after a warm night in bed and find that you cannot fill the kettle or take as shower as the pipes under the van are frozen. You look inside the boiler cupboard and utter a sigh of relief as there is no water on the floor and so assume no damage has occurred. Remove the brass drain bung and allow the system to drain before replacing the brass bung. If you don’t properly re-insert the brass bung you could have a horrible mess on your hands with a major spill! You may be wondering which antifreeze you should be using. Contrary to some advice out there, colours are not a sure-fire way of telling apart different types of caravan antifreeze products. There is a basic guide along the lines of:

While many modern boilers come with frost protection, separate frost protection thermostats are also available. After a good night’s sleep - use the water left in the kettle overnight for a cuppa prior to turning off all internal outlets and then turning the water on at the external/internal stop valve the pressure inside the mains water part of the warm combi boiler exceeds its 10 bar design specification. The shower mixers have already exceeded their 6 bar maximum and been damaged. These prices are only an estimate and do not include the cost of boiler installation. To get an accurate price for having a boiler with frost protection installed in your home, it's best to get advice from a professional. Below is a table showing the approximate total volume of a system and the volume of 100% antifreeze needed to protect that volume. If a system is found to contain less than 30% antifreeze/inhibitor, the easiest and safest way to rectify this is to drop the entire contents of the sealed system and refill using 30% pre-mix. The solution must be pre-mixed or there is a danger that by filling the system partially with fresh water and then adding neat antifreeze/inhibitor, insufficient mixing will occur.

Frost protection thermostats, on the other hand, are designed to protect boilers installed in an area that doesn't have central heating i.e. a garage or loft. Should the frost protection thermostat detect that the temperature has dropped to a certain level (commonly 5°C), the boiler will ignite sending hot water around the pipes to prevent them from freezing. What happens to frozen central heating? Antifreeze will also lubricate valves, seals and pump. In the case of a power- failure , the one, isolated area of frozen installation, could potentially stop circulation in the whole system and repairing a burst pipe embedded in a concrete floor is not easy or cheap! Antifreeze, the difference between Ethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol boils down to toxicity and performance efficiency. Ethylene glycol has considerably higher heat transmission capabilities, but propylene glycol is extremely safe. What Is The Purpose Of Ethylene Glycol Antifreeze? Many modern boilers come with built-in frost protection heating. This means that you don't need to have a separate frost protection thermostat installed. For the GB range of boilers the Fault code is L1 but you may also get a C displayed permanently after a momentary blue burner light and this is telling you that the boiler has overheated as there is no circulation in the heating circuit. Antifreeze fluid is a chemical compound that mixes with water to lower its solidification point. That is, although water freezes at 0ºC, mixed with antifreeze it must be subjected to lower temperatures to reach the solid-state. In addition to heating systems in houses, another typical use of antifreeze fluids is in cars. How to protect the static caravan central heating from freezing temperatures WILL NOT GUARANTEE a successful drain down. For this you need to use an experienced engineer with the specialist equipment needed to blow all the fresh water out of the system. Pink: Glycerine and Ethylene Glycol-based products like Pink G12++ and G13 antifreeze are pink in colour. Boilers have water within them that is susceptible to freezing in cold conditions and if this happens the boiler is likely to break down. To combat this, some modern boilers have a frost protection feature that sees the boiler turn on if the temperature of the water drops to a certain level, heating it up until the risk of freezing has been prevented.

Boiler frost protection is fitted to many combination boilers. For the current GB24 and GB30 combis they offer protection against frost for the I suspect that with the fact that the boiler is protected by a frost stat, and the pipes are insulated it will need to get considerably below zero outside for the pipes to freeze but its still a concern given I recorded -18 outside a couple of years ago!Just as we use antifreeze for our cars in winter, consider protecting your central heating system in a similar way with specialized antifreeze to prevent freeze-related problems. Winter temperatures are unpredictable, so precautions must be taken to protect vulnerable central heating systems such as those in holiday static caravans, or the part of the system that affects the least used rooms in the house such as guest rooms, conservatories, lofts and garages, against damage that may cause frozen pipes. If in doubt and depending on the installation, it is best to seek professional advice. Here’s how you put antifreeze in a static caravan central heating The most common cause why pipes burst in winter is if a pipe full of water is cooled so much that the water freezes, its volume will increase, which will cause pressure on the inside of the metal pipes that, if sufficient, will eventually break the pipe. Can you live in a static caravan in winter? In the case of the earlier ranges of boilers you will first need to remove a blanking nut and a small amount of water may leak out so have a cloth placed underneath the pump as shown below. Either a flat bladed screwdriver or an allen key will be needed to turn the spindle. the home owner understandably reacts with frustration and disbelief. Only when the whole process is explained do they start to understand that their unfortunate situation is due to frost.
